Audience is very important because when you understand your audience, you can adjust your views by getting the most out of your audience. You will know who will read your writing and the best way to satisfy their interests and prejudice. You will also arrange to write an article to help your readers understand you clearly.

Audiences did not remain the same with each assignment, they varied.

 

• 1^st assignments- user of the object, engineers, professors, first time users, students, a broad representation of audience.
• 2^nd assignment – students people interested in the lab’s specific topic of research, professors (doctoral candidates, colleagues) audience is semi broad
• 3^rd assignment – audience is very specific and focused. Depends on focus/purpose of project. Shrinks to a selected few people, possibly of an office or department, those in charge of meeting the proposal’s need s and/or decision marking.

Before the ENGL-210 course, I didn’t know how audience analysis is that important that will impact on the success of an engineering project. It is very important to know your audience before you write any paper.

Here is an example of audience for the lab report project. The reader of the report should be a professional electrical engineer working on small electronic circuits and power grids. Government project planners are also seen as an audience because the country is running electricity and the grid is being built and maintained. This report provides information on the best conductivity and the best value for the material. The results show that the price of iron is the lowest. However, engineers and managers should not consider iron as a wire because iron has a conductivity that is 50% lower than copper or aluminum. Since the grid/wire is used for a hundred years, power wasted due to conductivity leakage should be considered. After completing this lab report, I am more familiar with writing reports for engineers and managers. Price is not always the most important thing we should consider, and the performance of the material is also important.

I also did audience profile sheets before the body test began, which is helpful for our writing purpose.

        The audience can also be very specific, for example, my audience analysis on my engineering proposal

“The audience for this proposal is: Maria Melendez, Martin Burvill, and William Long.  Maria Melendez in the mayor of Ponce. Her may provide help for our drone testing in a coastal area that was damaged by Hurricane Maria. We plan to test our drones in Ponce, Puerto Rico, so her help is necessary. William Long is the Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. We hope to make our drones available for other areas that had natural disasters from his help. Martin Burvill is the Vice President and of Verizon. we hope to make our drones available to conduct to Verizon signals, where cell phone towers were destroyed and couldn’t provide services. Other technicians, engineers, geeks could also be the audience. Our project proposal provided a great solution for emergency communication recover, but it is not limit to communication recover. It is also a useful solution for goods and materials delivery, since our drones have a huge payload area. It can deliver food, water, and medicines to any area that destroyed by natural disasters. Internet/telephone service providers could be the audience as well. They may need a good solution for any type of recovering emergency communication.”
