Purpose

Purpose – why we write 3 main purposes persuade, educated/ inform, entertain

How did you engage with purpose throughout the semester?

  • Purpose changed with every assignment. Tech description – inform vs proposal – persuade.
  • Purpose impacts content. Knowing why you are writing will determine that you will include
    • Facts
    • Description
    • Information

How did you analyze Purpose impact your writing?

  • Constant consideration of purpose.
  • Purpose impacts content because you need to know what to include on why you are writing.
  • Purpose must be clear and present in order to not get lost in the assignment (re: sample works)
  • Audience impacts purpose – if purpose is not clear, audience will not understand the text.

What could happen if you fail to understand your purpose?

Failing to understand your purpose, the information provided will not be accepted by the audience. Authors will not be able to communicate with their audience. The audience will not be able to use this work.

Each assignment has their own purpose, for example, in technical description we were focusing more on information than a proposal. The technical description is a description documentation that descripts an item. In my technical description, I provided historical background, object dimensions, functions and performance of the item is selected, but these elements could not be discussed in a lab report and engineering proposal. In the lab report, the purpose was shifting to educated audience. The lab report should include results and discussion, which helps audience understand the experiment you did. Also, it is crucial that make the lab report easy to re-visualize, since a same science experiment should have a same result. Otherwise, the lab report is unreliable. In the engineering proposal, the propose was changed to persuade audience, since proposals in our project were basically asked for funding and permittion.
